Sol.

Aiming towards ‘One Nation, One Time’ and achieving precision in Indian Standard Time (IST), the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India has undertaken a project in association with National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and India Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to disseminate IST with millisecond to microsecond accuracy.  The project aims to create technology and infrastructure to disseminate IST from five Legal Metrology laboratories across India.

The Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2025 were drafted by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). NPL functions under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and is the national timekeeper of India. It is responsible for maintaining Indian Standard Time (IST) and plays a central role in time dissemination and standardization.

The other institutions listed are not involved in this domain:

  • Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) primarily deals with space and atmospheric sciences.
  • Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) focuses on scientific instrumentation.
  • National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) is engaged in multidisciplinary scientific research but not in timekeeping or legal metrology.
