Write four reasons to start Universal Basic Income Concept in India. (HPAS Mains Question Paper 2022 – GS 3, Q.1)

There are a number of reasons why Universal Basic Income (UBI) could be a viable concept in India. Here are four of them:

  • Reducing poverty: India has a large population that lives below the poverty line, and UBI could be an effective tool for reducing poverty and improving the poor’s standard of living. UBI could ensure that everyone has access to necessities such as food, shelter, and healthcare by providing a guaranteed minimum income to all citizens.
  • Promoting economic growth: By providing all citizens with a basic level of purchasing power, UBI could help to stimulate economic growth. This could lead to increased consumer spending and demand for goods and services, resulting in increased economic activity and job creation.
  • Simplifying social welfare programmes: India currently has a complex social welfare system that is plagued by corruption and inefficiency. UBI could streamline the scenario by providing a single, universal benefit to all citizens, eliminating the need for multiple programs with varying eligibility requirements.
  • Addressing job losses caused by automation: As automation and artificial intelligence become more prevalent, many industries face job losses. UBI could help to mitigate the impact of job losses by providing a basic level of income to all citizens, regardless of employment status.
