  • The legendary P.T. Usha become the first woman president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as she emerged as the lone candidate for the top post for the December 10 elections.
  • Pilavullakandi Thekkeraparambil Usha was born on June 27, 1964, in Kuttali, Kozhikode, Kerala.
  • PT Usha started her training in 1976 under coach O.M. Nambiar after Kerala State government started a women’s sports division in Kannur.
  • In 1985 she won six medals at the Asian Championship in Jakarta to set a record for the most gold medals won at a single event in the championship.
  • Usha won medals in 100m and 200m at the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games. In all, she won a total of 23 medals in the Asian Championships from 1983 to 1998.
  • PT Usha had finished fourth in the final of the 1984 Olympic 400m hurdles. The Indian Olympic Association is the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of India.
  • Its function is to select athletes to represent India in the Olympic Games, Asian Games and other international multi-sport events and manage the Indian team. It functions similarly to the Commonwealth Games Federation of India, and also selects athletes to represent India at the Commonwealth Games.
