India slips in World Press Freedom Index, ranks 161

  • The ranking of India in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index has slipped 11 places to 161, according to the latest report released by global media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF). In 2022, the country was ranked at 150 out of 180 countries.
  • The 2023 Index describes the negative impact the fake content industry of the digital ecosystem has on freedom of the press.
  • The remarkable development of Artificial Intelligence is wreaking further havoc on the media world.
  • The World Press Freedom Index includes political indicators, economic indicators, legislative indicators, social indicators and security indicators.
  • It has assessed the environment for journalism in 180 countries and territories. The situation is “very serious” in 31 countries, “difficult” in 42 countries, “problematic” in 55 and “good” or “satisfactory” in 52 countries.
  • In other words, the journalism climate is “poor” in seven out of ten countries and satisfactory in only three out of ten countries.
  • Major countries – France (24), South Africa (25), UK (26), Australia (27), USA (45), Japan (68). India has come down to 161st position out of 180 countries. In 2022, India was to be ranked 150th.
  • Pakistan has climbed up seven ranks to reach 150th position this year. Sri Lanka is also ranked 135 this year as compared to 146 in 2022 in the index.
