Gujarat Cable Bridge Collapse, more than 100 people died

  • On October 30, 2022, more than 100 people have died in an accident caused by the collapse of a cable bridge in Morbi city of Gujarat.
  • This 1.25 m wide and 233 m long bridge over the Machu River was built in the year 1877 during the British colonial rule.
  • It was inaugurated in the year 1880 by Sir Richard Temple, who was the then Governor of Mumbai.
  • The suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in Gujarat’s Morbi that collapsed on Sunday evening killing 91 people was reopened for the public just four days back after seven months of repair work by a private firm, but had not received the municipality’s “fitness certificate”, an official said.
  • It was recently renovated and opened to the public. About 400 people, including children, had bought tickets to visit the bridge to celebrate Diwali and Chhath Puja, but the bridge collapsed and people on the bridge fell into the river about 10 meters (33 ft) below.
