- The Election Commission Monday recognised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a national party, while revoking that status of the All India Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI).
- Citing the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order 1968, the election body has withdrawn the national party status of TMC, CPI and NCP.
- The BJP, the Congress, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Aam Aadmi Party are now national parties.
- Political parties registered as per the Representation of the People Act 1951 may, over time, be recognized as a ‘State Party’ or a ‘National Party’.
