Avani Chaturvedi becomes the first IAF woman fighter pilot to participate in aerial wargames abroad

  • For the first time an Indian Air Force (IAF) female fighter pilot, Squadron Leader Avani Chaturvedi, will participate in aerial war games which are to be held aboard.
  • She will be a part of the Indian contingent for the maiden ‘Veer Guardian 2023’ joint exercise between India and Japan which will be hosted by the latter at the Hyakuri Air Base from January 12 to 26. 
  • According to ANI, the exercise will be carried out by Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF) and the Indian Air Force (IAF), at the aforementioned air Base in Japan and its surrounding airspace in Omitama, and the Iruma Air Base in Sayama. 
  • The Indian contingent will consist of 139 personnel including a woman medical officer, said a report by Hindustan Times citing anonymous official sources. Earlier today, they were scheduled to leave for Japan. 

Avani Chaturvedi:-

  • Brought up in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, Squadron Leader Avani did her B.Tech in Computer Science from Banasthali University, Rajasthan. During her studies, she joined the college flying club and learned to fly planes.
  • After completing B.Tech, Avani completed 6 months of rigorous training at the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad. After completion of training, Avni joined the fighter squadron.
  • As a flying opportunity in the year 2018, Avani became the first Indian woman to fly a MIG-21 fighter plane solo. At this time Avani flies Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter plane. There are currently 17 women fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force.
