The Election Commission Monday recognised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a national party, while revoking that status of the All India Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI).
Citing the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order 1968, the election body has withdrawn the national party status of TMC, CPI and NCP.
The BJP, the Congress, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the National People's Party (NPP) and the Aam Aadmi Party are now national parties.
Political parties registered as per the Representation of the People Act 1951 may, over time, be recognized as a 'State Party' or a 'National Party'.
