Swachh Bharat Mission celebrates 10 years of striving for a clean India, focusing on eliminating open defecation, improving sanitation infrastructure, and promoting waste management.
🎉 10th Anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM): Launched by Prime Minister Modi in 2014, SBM celebrates its 10th anniversary on October 2, 2024, marking a decade of progress towards a clean India.
🎯 Goal: SBM aimed to make India open defecation-free (ODF) by Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary in 2019, contributing towards Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 for equitable sanitation access.
🏠 Two Components:
- SBM-Gramin: Focused on rural areas, managed by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
- SBM-Urban: Targeted urban regions, overseen by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
📌 Focus Areas:
- Individual Household Toilets: Ensuring every household has a toilet to eliminate open defecation.
- Community/Public Toilets: Installing facilities in high-traffic areas where household toilets may not be practical.
- Solid Waste Management: Effective waste collection, segregation, and disposal to promote cleanliness.
- Awareness Campaigns: Promoting hygiene and sustainable cleanliness through public awareness.
🎯 Targets Achieved: Millions of household and community toilets constructed, ODF status achieved across cities and villages, increased funding from Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 per toilet.
🌱 SBM 2.0: Launched in 2021, focusing on creating garbage-free cities, faecal sludge management, plastic waste reduction, and greywater management.
