Uttar Pradesh topped in the construction of Amrit Sarovar

  • Uttar Pradesh has topped the states in the country with the construction of 8,462 Amrit Sarovars (lakes), while implementing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Mission Amrit Sarovar, aimed at conserving water for the future. 
  • Within Uttar Pradesh, Lakhimpur Kheri has secured the first position by constructing 256 Amrit Sarovars, while Gorakhpur and Pratapgarh have got second and third positions, with 244 and 231 lakes, respectively.
  • Rural Development Director GS Priyadarshi said that on the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as many as 15,497 Amrit Sarovars were identified in various village panchayats of which 8,462 had already been developed — twice the number of Amrit Sarovars developed collectively in MP, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.
  • Mission Amrit Sarovar was launched on 24 April 2022 with the aim of water conservation. The objective of the mission is to develop and rejuvenate 75 water bodies in each district of the country as part of the celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. In all, this would result in the creation of 50,000 reservoirs of about one acre or more in size. The mission encourages the mobilization of civil and non-governmental resources to meet these efforts.
