- Democrat Maura Healey has made U.S. history in Massachusetts by becoming America’s first elected openly lesbian governor.
- Healey, the Bay State’s current attorney general, is projected by Fox News’ Decision Desk to defeat Republican Geoff Diehl for the position.
- With the victory of Maura Haley, after eight years in Massachusetts, a Democrat is going to sit for the governor’s chair.
- Prior to this, Republican Charlie Baker was the governor of Massachusetts. Besides Haley, another lesbian candidate contested the election, Democrat Tina Kotak. Tina contested from Oregon. Healey was also elected attorney general in 2014.
- She was the first lesbian woman to hold this position. She has previously been a civil rights lawyer. Healey, a gay marriage advocate, challenged the Marriage Act in court. In fact, same-sex marriage was banned under the Marriage Act.
- Indian-origin Aruna Miller has become the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. She is the first American woman of Indian origin to hold this position.
