ISRO and Hughes launch India’s first commercial satellite broadband service

  • Hughes Communications India (HCI) in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on Monday officially launched its first high throughput satellite (HTS) broadband internet service in the country. The company had been testing its operation in North India for the last year.  
  • Using ISRO’s Ku-band capacity of GSAT-11 and GSAT-29 satellites, the company has promised to deliver high-speed satellite broadband services to remote locations across India, from northeast to desolate parts of Leh and Ladakh.
  • Hughes Communications India partnered with ISRO to provide internet service through satellite. Now the company announced that the first High-Throughput Satellite (HTS) broadband service powered by ISRO is being launched commercially.
  • With this the country has got the first satellite internet service. This has come at a time when Elon Musk’s company Starlink has closed its operations in India.
