India’s chess player Vignesh NR has become India’s 80th Grandmaster

  • India’s chess player Vignesh NR has become India’s 80th Grandmaster after defeating Germany’s IM Ilja Schneider and has won the 24th Nordwest Cup 2023 in Germany.
  • The win also earned him first place at the 24th NordWest Cup 2023. His brother GM Visakh Narayanan Rajeshwari became India’s 59th Grandmaster back in 2019.
  • Thus, Vignesh and Visakh have etched their name in history by becoming India’s first brothers to become Grandmasters. 
  • Vignesh earned his first GM-norm at the age of 17 at the 2015 Qatar Masters, his second GM-norm at the 24th Abu Dhabi Masters in 2017 and his last GM-norm at the 1st Gujarat GM Open in 2018, also achieved the 4th GM-NORM at the Asian Continental 2019 Jingtai, China.
