PM Modi inaugurated an international, high-speed passenger ferry service in Palk Strait between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, India, and Kankesanthurai, near Jaffna in Sri Lanka.

  • The Tamil Nadu Maritime Board and Shipping Corporation of India run the service.
  • It will run every day and take around 3.5 hours to travel the distance of 60 nautical miles (110 kilometers).
  • There is a 50kg free baggage allowance for passengers.
  • Through the port of Thoothukudi, the IndoCeylon Express, also known as Board Mail, used to run between Chennai and Colombo.
  • But because of the island nation’s civil conflict, this came to an end in 1982.
