Amazon to set up its first solar power plant in India

  • Amazon on September 21, 2022, announced the setting up of its first solar farm in India. The e-commerce major will be setting up three solar power projects with a capacity of 420 megawatt (MW).
  • “In the Asia-Pacific region, Amazon is announcing the company’s first three large-scale projects in India. 
  • All three are solar projects in Rajasthan, representing 420 MW of clean energy capacity. Amazon is scaling fast in India, and these first investments play a critical role in reducing our carbon emissions in the country.”
  • The National Institute of Solar Energy has estimated the country’s solar potential to be around 748 GW. The Government of India has set a target to have 300 GW of installed solar power capacity by 2030.
  • According to the Government of India, the total installed solar capacity in the country at the end of November 2021 was 48.55 GW. India has the 5th largest installed power capacity in the world after China, USA, Japan and Germany.
