AFSPA extended for six months in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland

  • The Union home ministry on 30 Spetember, 2022 extended for six months the “disturbed area” status of parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, PTI reported. The order will come into effect from October 1.
  • In Arunachal Pradesh, Tirap, Changland, and Longding districts and areas under Namsai & Mahadevpur police stations in Namsai district have been declared as “disturbed areas”.
  • In Nagaland, areas in 9 districts, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, Peren and Zunheboto have been marked as “disturbed” under the contentious Act.
  • The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 empowers security forces to conduct operations and arrest anyone without any prior warrant besides giving immunity from arrest and prosecution to the security forces if they shoot someone dead.
